Heritage Committee

Constitutional Position

The Heritage Committee operates within the constitution of the Society and pursues three of the Society’s formal objectives, namely:

(a) stimulating interest in the history, character and traditions of Battersea

(c) engaging in, and promoting awareness of,[heritage] issues of concern to the community

(d) making representations to the proper authorities on these subjects

To this end the Heritage Committee:

  • works constructively with Wandsworth Borough Council, Historic England, other statutory authorities, Battersea Power Station, Vauxhall-Nine Elms Partnership, voluntary organisations, charities, churches and persons having aims similar to those of the Society

  • provides information to members on heritage matters through Battersea Matters, the Society website and the annual report to the AGM

Its geographic focus is that of the Society, namely the former borough of Battersea.

The Committee is delegated by the Executive of the Society to undertake these tasks. As required by the constitution, the Committee always has at least one trustee amongst its membership.

The role of the Heritage Committee

Particular tasks to be undertaken by the Heritage Committee include:

i. representing the Society on the Wandsworth Heritage Committee

ii. ensuring, in conjunction with the Events Committee, that the Society makes appropriate contributions to Wandsworth Heritage Fortnight, whether through . lectures, walks or in other ways

iii. considering whether there are further candidates who deserve to be commemorated by plaques erected by the Society and, if appropriate, arranging for a plaque to be erected and inaugurated with due publicity

iv. responding, where possible, to enquiries from outside about Battersea history and former Battersea residents

v. promoting the erection of interpretation panels to explain the history of particular sites in Battersea, starting initially with sites along the Thames Path.

vi. promoting inclusion in the Borough Archives of additional material relating to Battersea, including records of the Society’s own activities.
