WHAT WE DO

Each year we create a programme of talks, walks, visits to places of history and culture and social get togethers for our members – as well as public meetings and gatherings that focus on local issues and campaigns.

Recently we have been running a series of virtual talks online which has been very successful – and very well attended – but as the year unfolds we are returning to live events, which is bringing a smile to everyone’s face.

Our talks cover a range of subjects from The Hidden Rivers of South London and Urban Greening in Wandsworth to Battersea Riverside Industrial Heritage and the life of silver screen Bride of Frankenstein legend Elsa Lanchester who lived in Battersea. We are incredibly lucky to have access to some great local historians – most of whom are members of the Society and are also active members of our Heritage Committee and their knowledge and passion for research means we have some truly fascinating talks.

We have four main social events a year – a Twelfth Night Supper in January, a Spring Lunch in April, a Summer Party in July and a Christmas Gathering in December. Our Summer Party is held in the grounds of St Mary’s Church, alongside the Thames, and is a real celebration of our community and an evening for members to mingle and enjoy the riverside scenery. Plus, we have an annual film night at the Royal College of Art when we have a screening of an iconic movie that features locations or storylines in and around London.

Visits to historical locations or buildings of interest sit alongside our talks offering and are often to places that are not open to the public on a regular basis. In the past we have been able to organise group visits to places such as Keats House, The Society of Antiquaries, London’s Roman Amphitheatre, Cutlers’ Hall and Dulwich College… and many more.

If you would like to help or contribute to our events calendar please let us know. All ideas and offers of help welcome!
