Beat the Bounds of Battersea Walk

  • St Mary's Church Battersea Church Road London, England, SW11 3NA United Kingdom (map)

This is a joint initiative by the heritage groups of the Battersea Society and the Friends of Wandsworth Common. This quaint custom takes place on Rogation Sunday – when historically a procession of church parishioners would proceed around the boundary of their parish and pray for its protection.  Participants can either complete the whole 11 miles – earning a special certificate to prove it! – or join a section of the walk at a designated time. There will be staging posts at Nine Elms, on Clapham Common and on Wandsworth Common where participants will be able to learn more about the history of the areas visited.  More information on beating the bounds can be found on the Battersea Society website (Heritage section).

The walk will start and end at St Mary’s Church and there are joining/stopping points along the route as follows:

Nine Elms Bourne Wharf pavilion (11.15am)

Clapham Common Bandstand (13.00pm)

Wandsworth Common boundary oak near Routh Rd (14.45pm)

St Mary's start (9.45am) and end (c16.30pm)

Please register in advance.

A map of the route and advice for participants is available here.
