Clapham Junction Station 2022/4923

The Battersea Society is concerned that this application for an interchange over-bridge and lifts between platforms will do little to reduce congestion and future proof against increased footfall. We have found it hard to envisage the proposals but understand that these proposals would not add step-free access for passengers entering the station from Grant Road. Such access seems to us to be essential in order to reduce traffic in the tunnel and future proof the station against increases in footfall.

We would be interested to know if any research has been done to quantify the number of people using the tunnel to change platforms rather than as the primary access to start their journey.

As you are aware, the developments approved for the Winstanley Estate and along York Road are likely to increase footfall from the south quite substantially. Our view is that this small change to the station will do little to improve the travelling experience for passengers and should be replaced by a more extensive proposal to improve access from street level at the southern end of the station.

We hope that Network Rail will consider these proposals further before going ahead and look forward to contributing to the discussions.
