  • Lavender Hill London, England, SW11 5TN United Kingdom (map)

Recreation Room, Battersea Arts Centre, Lavender Hill, London SW11 5TN

Can we ever discover the date, time and context of the world's first-ever handshake?  Probably not.  But can we establish when and why the handshake emerged as a mainstream form of greeting? Yes, we can!  In this illustrated talk, historian Penelope Corfield explores the antiquity of the gesture, explains its emergence as a daily greeting and (at the end) briefly speculates on its future prospects.

£5 payable in advance online or on the door - the talk starts at 7pm
